What’s The Hot Trend In Men’s Hairstyles Today…The Undercut

9/25/2016

The Undercut has been a staple hair trend in men’s runway and fashion editorial looks. This haircut is common amongst many celebrities and has maintained a long-lasting popularity with younger generations eager to seize the trend. There are several reasons for this. Firstly it’s youthful and can work incredibly well with all hair types… curly, straight or wavy. The other great thing about the undercut is that it can be interpreted in many ways. From the classic interpretations to the more modern adaptations and everything in between, consider this your ultimate guide for the top undercut hairstyles you should try today.
1. The Classic Undercut
For the more conservative, go for a classic cut maintaining trimmed sides, but leaving the top a little long…but not too long. The classic undercut is recommended for those who may be a little apprehensive about this haircut because isn’t too extreme. Styling the classic undercut is simple, and a bit of hair product will keep it clean and polished. A wet look mousse or gel offers this cut a 40’s/50’s look.
2. Layered Undercut
A layered undercut offers something a bit different. This version is advised for those who want to add fullness and depth to their hair. Adding layers, will add volume to visually amplify your hair.
3. Slicked Back Undercut
The key to pulling off this undercut is to ensure your hair is long enough to style it back. You’ll want to keep your hair longer, and to use a great quality hair product to tame the longer proportions up top like American Crew Pomade. For a more modern take on this cut opt for a matt finish product to keep things relatively textured. Brush or finger style your hair  for maximum volume using a hair dryer.
For a more old school adaptation of the trend, a gel like AC’s firm hold gel will ensure the cut looks more structured while maintaining a relaxed reference to the past.
4. Side Swept Undercut
The side-swept undercut can be best described as a side swept pompadour. The first step to harnessing a side swept undercut is to ensure you have longer proportions up top so the slicking of the hair works well with the shorter sides of your haircut. Make sure that you are parting your hair the right way. This differs for everyone, so make sure that you are choosing the best part for your face. Generally, this is determined by which way your hair naturally falls...so go with the flow.
5. Puffy Undercut
You will need a lot of volume and texture to pull off the puffy undercut. Typically, this works best for guys with curly hair. You will find this styling easier to recreate, particularly when it comes to applying product to your hair to enhance your natural waves. For men with straighter hair types, creating more texture with the layering will aid when it comes to styling this cut. Keep in mind that matte hair product works nicely with this version. We recommend American Crew texture Cream.
6. Disconnected Undercut
The disconnected undercut relies on a severe contrast between the hair on top adjoining the shaved sides of your hair, distinguished with a line. They way to interpret this look comes down to styling. This version is inspired by the 40’s look keeping a side part and using hair products which make your hair look more sleek to develop the retro aspects of your styling.
7. Long Undercut
If you’re looking to make a statement with your hairstyle, the longer-haired undercut offers just that. The combination of short sides with long, unbridled hair on top makes for a striking pairing. This cut brings a sense of style to a long-haired look that might otherwise present itself to be unkempt or scruffy. Have your stylist take some of the weight out of your hair when having it cut; this will ensure your mane will flow and keep the contrast looking distinct.

8. THE UNDERCUT BUN AKA THE TOP KNOT
The undercut bun or as others would call it, a top knot is a hybrid of two of the trendiest hairstyles…the man bun and the undercut.
It’s a way to keep your long hair with an undercut but in a more controlled, modern context. A top knot is a great option for hair in that awkward transitioning length, bringing an edgy, but controlled look to your longer hair.

9. Pompadour
This look is a modern version of the 50’s pompadour ...Think Elvis...with a twist. It works best with longer locks and brings a stylish and slick look to your length. Think along the lines of the slicked back version but bigger and bolder. You’ll want to use a wet-look, product like gel and comb for the most authentic interpretation of the ‘50s look.

10. Forward-Swept Undercut
The forward-swept hair brings a modern take on this haircut, and could regenerate the fringe’s rebirth in 2016. This cut offers a neat rendition that works best with shorter hair. Opt for consistent length across the top. It’s best to use a matt product to get this look and to add some interesting texture.

COLOR WOW - New at Main Street Hair Company

Color Wow is the latest innovation from Gail Federici, co-founder of John Frieda's hair care company and visionary behind their ground-breaking formulas created to address problems specific to frizzy hair and blondes.

Their products are revolutionary. COLOR WOW only developed products that weren't already out there in other lines. Essentially, these products fill a need that no other line can fill.

We recently started carrying this line of hair products, specifically formulated for color-treated hair. Most new products don't knock the socks off of Pam, Alicia, and Courtney, but these did... here's why:

-You can use their root touch up powder to hide your grays in-between root touch-up appointments, and the powder stays put even when you sweat, go swimming, or get caught in a rainstorm - it only washes out with shampoo!

Click HERE to watch a demo of how to apply Color Wow ...  Seeing IS believing.
We bet you'll say "Wow!"

-Their Brass Banned mousse is one part color toning treatment and one part amazing styling aid. The mousses - one for blondes, and one for brunettes - are lilac and teal toned, respectively, and counteract yellow/brassy unwanted tones in your color. All blondes need a little toner, and brunettes with golden or caramel lights can use a little help with non-brassifying as well.

-The One Minute Transformation cream gives you second-day hair on day one. Wash, dry, style, and use this cream, and your hair will look smooth, de-frizzed, and not oily, greasy, or product-y. It. Is. Amazing. We have been in the beauty business for a while, and none of us have seen anything as awesome as this stuff! It's magical.

-Pop and Lock gives you shine, volume (pop), and locks in your color. It's a serum that can be applied wet or dry and has color protectant and shine particles to make your hair look amazing!

-Speed Dry
reduces the amount of drying time by 30% percent! Who couldn't use an extra few minutes in the mornings? It's an alcohol-free formula that counteracts porosity and forms a high-gloss, protective clear-coat on hair to extend the life of color while it works.

-The hair cocktails.... oh, the hair cocktails are probably our FAVORITE out of all these products.  These are leave-in, bond-building supplements that are essential for anyone caring for color-treated hair. Even with our All Nutrient, Organic hair color, there are chemicals in all hair color that are notorious "evil-doers" that infiltrate healthy hair and corrupt the vital internal and external bonds that keep hair thick, supple and strong. It is critical to "intervene" with a Cocktail (ideally, every time after you shampoo and condition) to give hair a supplemental, bond-building boost. The "secret agents" in Color Wow Cocktails to help strengthen, thicken or renew elasticity and suppleness... and keep your color wow.

Color Wow Coconut Cocktail - Bionic Tonic
Bonds a new lubricating layer to hair’s surface, restoring silkiness and mobility

Color processing strips away the natural, outer “lubricating film” that keeps your hair moist, mobile and manageable. This super-powered, leave-in “bionic tonic” bonds to hair’s surface, mimicking the lost lubricating layer with a precision blend of fatty acids and emollients. Deep penetrating Coconut Oil hydrates deep within the cortex, improving strength and flexibility. Instantly transforms dry, unresponsive, dehydrated hair into fluidly-silky, supple strands.

Color Wow Kale Cocktail - Bionic Tonic
Reinforces internal bonds to strengthen hair by over 50% with just use one use

Color processing breaks down hair’s natural, internal cysteine bonds which give each strand strength and resilience. This mega-force “bionic tonic” with sulphur-rich sea kale helps relink and reinforce hair’s vital internal bonds. Loaded with protein-building Amino Acids plus B Vitamins, this strand- strengthening super-power smoothes, detangles and has been clinically proven to reduce breakage by over 50% after one single application. Helps guard hair against UV ray damage.

Color Wow Carb Cocktail - Bionic Tonic
bonds a high-carb complex to hair’s surface, fattening fine, limp strands and giving hair style-holding “starch”

Color processing makes hair porous and causes loss of natural protein mass. This super-powered, leave-in “bionic tonic” bonds to hair’s surface, adding a precision blend of corn starch, cellulose and oat bran to thicken strand girth and expand hair mass. Quinoa and keratin protein fortify and deliver visibly heftier, healthier-looking hair with a smooth, glossy surface. Like starch-based “sizing” (used when ironing clothing to add substance to flimsy, limp fabrics), Carb Cocktail is activated and amplified when hair is heat-styled. The result is exceptionally full body and style-holding stamina, without stiffness or stickiness.

Picture

They even offer a revolutionary Shampoo and Conditioner specifically for color-treated hair. Why spend $100 or more on beautiful color and wash it down the drain because of color-stripping shampoo?
  • WHY IT’S WOW: CONTAINS NO INGREDIENTS TO DULL OR DARKEN YOUR HAIR COLOR
  • Free of discoloring silicones, conditioning agents, or “pearlizing” ingredients that layer on a dulling, darkening film with each shampoo, so color and highlights stay vivid and bright.
  • New technology makes other sulfate-free formulas obsolete.
  • Clinically proven to be as gentle on color-treated hair as water
  • Color Security is gentle and sulfate-free to keep the cuticle tight – without sacrificing rich lather.
  • Keeps color and highlights looking fresh, sparkling and bright

Visit Main Street Hair Company to try some of these products, and watch out for our Fall OPEN HOUSE where we will be debuting the line while we drink wine, have some finger foods, and chat about hair!

Easy Puff Carmel Corn

Picture
We love to share our favorite recipes with you, our valued clients! Here's a great fall recipe for kids and adults alike. Kids love it because there's no popcorn hulls to stick to their teeth, ....and it's easy to make!

Prep Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 50 mins
Servings: 15

ABOUT THIS RECIPE
"Puff Corn can be found in the potato chip aisle of your grocery store. (The brand we have is Old Dutch, but I'm sure there are others.) Making caramel corn this way gives you great big "kernels" with no hulls or old maids. Quite addictive. Great at a party. Makes nice gifts too."

INGREDIENTS
1 (8 ounce) bags puff corn
1 cup butter (do not substitute)
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda

DIRECTIONS
  • Place puff corn in a large roaster pan.
  • In 2 quart sauce pan bring the butter, sugar & corn syrup to bring to boil, then cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add the baking soda- this will cause the caramel mixture to foam up.
  • Stir well and remove from heat.
  • Pour over puff corn in roaster and bake in 250* oven for 45 minutes, stirring every 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove from oven, spread out onto wax paper to cool.

Fun and Yummy Halloween Oreo Balls

Picture
What a fun easy project to do with your kids or grandkids…
4 adorable and festive Halloween Oreo Balls — monsters, pumpkins, bats, and mummies; each made with 5 ingredients or less!

Author: Chelseas Messy Apron
Serves: 20

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 package (16 ounces) regular Oreos
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1 bag (12 ounces) Candy Melts
  • 18-20 Large Edible eyes
Refer to the link for individual versions: http://www.chelseasmessyapron.com/5-ingredient-halloween-oreo-truffles/

  • Pulse the full oreos (no need to separate cream from cookie) in a food processor or blender until it is in crumbs.
  • Using a hand held mixer, beat the Oreos and cream cheese together until well combined.
  • Roll the mixture into balls.
  • Chill the balls, covered tightly, for an hour in the fridge.
  • Once the balls are chilled, melt the candy melts according to package directions. (This is technically another ingredient, but you may need a teaspoon (or a few) of vegetable oil to get the chocolate thin enough to dip in. Every chocolate is a little different so if needed, I'll just add the oil slowly until it coats the oreo truffles well.)
  • Place a ball on a fork and then spoon the melted chocolate evenly over the ball. Tap the fork holding the ball to remove excess chocolate.
  • Slide the ball carefully onto parchment paper and immediately (it hardens quickly) press and hold an edible eye into the center.
  • Sprinkle the sprinkles on top of the ball.
  • Allow to dry.

NOTES
Cook time refers to chilling time.

                                                                  ENJOY!
